I’d like to tell a few words about what type of mistakes bloggers as usual make in the SEO questions. So, what are these mistakes and how much are they crucial?
One of the most frequent mistakes is automatic “title” tag generation (from the message header, category title etc). Each page of category choice and most part of pages that are pointed to by the permanent links (in particular pages of the messages) should be constructed individually. Besides it is not very good practice to use the name of the blog as message header or category title for many times. Why? Because the ideal message header will be ideal “title” tag very rare. Optimization of your header or category title by synonyms search, use of different verb tenses etc can destroy its pithiness and logic structure, what will have negative influence on the visitor. For instance, instead of “Social marketing optimization” one can use “Project promotion in social networks! Up-to-date marketing with the intake of the whole WEB 2.0 power” and this broadens the key words usage.
If you do not have time or possibilities to do this and you don’t want to work with header tags that were generated automatically, then you can write a small script by yourself. It has to output automatically generated headers at the beginning of “title” tag and only afterwards page name and blog name. It will give the chance to use it more effectively.
Second mistake lies in the indexing widening of the pages that must not be index-linked. E.g. you should not permit for indexing by Search Engines pages like “Send this page on the e-mail” or “Print version” because they represent the same page with a little bit changed content. Check which of your pages were indexed by Search Engines and find which should not be there. Then prohibit it for indexing in robots.txt.
The third mistake is to place blog on the several areas at the same time. For instance, blog is located on the purchased hosting with your own Domain and simultaneously is translated on the free bloghosting. If blog is accessible via several addresses then there surely will be issues with the identification of placed on this blog content uniqueness, and this will decrease the rating in Search Engines essentially.
So, another mistake is refuse from the usage of “optional excerpts” function, destination of which is to minimize content duplication. This function can have different names in other blog engines, but in WordPress “optional excerpts”is exactly what will help you to point another one page copy that can be located anywhere but to have the same URL. This will make the content tied with permanent link to the pages, decreasing potentiality of the blog position loss because of content non-uniqueness.
